Congratulations to Upper Sixth Form student, Toby, who achieved first prize in a national History essay writing competition recently

On 29th April, Bloxham student Toby Clark and History teacher Simon Batten attended an awards ceremony, which saw Toby being awarded a prestigious national award. Toby was receiving his prize, having won first place in the Sixth Form Essay Competition, which is run by the Society for Army Historical Research.

The prize was part of the Society’s Award Ceremony, held at the East India Club; other prizes were awarded to the best Undergraduate essay and to the best military history book of 2014. Toby received his prize, a certificate and a cheque for ‘300, from the Society’s Patron, Field Marshal the Duke of Kent. Toby’s winning essay examined the military careers of three members of the Cartwright family, and especially their experiences at the battles of Waterloo (1815), Inkerman (1854) and Ypres (1917), and the judges made a point of commending his use of primary sources from the Cartwright archives. ‘The skills he showed in writing the essay will be of great use to him in his intended subject, War Studies, at university.
