Last night’s match was an emotional tribute by staff and students to those Black Caps Cricket members who are leaving Bloxham this year. Team Captain Dan Jordan led his Seymour side to a sterling victory

Last night’s match was an emotional tribute to those Black Caps Cricket staff members who are leaving Bloxham this year.

Once a Black Cap always a Black Cap. Thursday 18th June was a sad day for the Black Caps as we said farewell to another of the ‘originals’, Dan Jordan, as well as two of the newer members who have wholeheartedly embraced the Black Cap ethos, Amber Reed and Duncan Rands.

The DKJ Seymour XI vs the Captain’s XI was played under warm and sunny skies with DKJ’s Seymour XI bowling first. Despite some good batting from Tom Gurney and Finn Smith at the top of the order, some tight bowling from Haynes, Gulliver and A Smith quickly swung the game in DKJ’s favour. However, two of the Black Caps favourite sons, Hobley and Quinney, dug in and with some lung-busting running between the wickets, managed to raise the score to an acceptable 107 off 20 overs. DKJ’s XI then batted but were pegged back by the one woman wicket machine, Kate Davies, who took one wicket and two catches alongside tight bowling from Reed and Richmond. Yet cometh the hour cometh the man, in this case Rob Hudson, who caressed his highest ever score, 31*, to steer DKJ’s XI to a three wicket win.

However, the result didn’t matter as it was far more a celebration of the Black Caps’ spirit and camaraderie and those leaving the BC’s family were presented with signed pictures from the whole team. So, as Dan heads to Eastbourne, Amber to Bristol and Duncan to Reading, we wish them well and thank them for their efforts over the years, safe in the knowledge that…
