Our Combined Cadet Force (CCF) pupils had a successful visit to Yardley Chase Training Area in Northampton.
The two-day excursion comprised of training on various different weapon systems used by the British Army with a display and talk on several different rifles. Cadets then spent the night in an open, ex-WWII ammunition bunker, cooking their pre-issued rations using alcohol stoves before getting a good night’s sleep.
The following day was blank firing day. In the morning, the cadets were taught the necessary skills for attacking an enemy position, working in two fire teams. In the afternoon they carried out a number of section attacks against an enemy position and took it in turns to adopt leadership roles.
In the evening, after cleaning the rifles, cadets had the chance to use a variety of night vision and thermal imaging equipment to locate and identify various objects place in the darkness.
The final morning was spent preparing for and taking part in a map and compass competition, in which the cadets were required to locate markers placed around the training area using 8-figure grid references, and stamp their cards before returning to base in the shortest time.
