In June, Bloxham’s Fourth Form CCF cadets ‘took part in a Method of Instruction Cadre course, teaching them essential leadership skills.

Below is a report from Monty Ng, one of our cadets who successfully completed the training:

The two day course, which finished in the successful promotion of everyone from cadet to Lance Corporal, taught us the skill of teaching two types of lesson: skill-based and fact-based. We each had to lead a 15 to 20 minute session for each of the two subjects. For the skill-based lesson we had to choose from a variety of military subjects (I chose orienteering) and for the fact-based lesson we were allowed to choose our own subject. This freedom gave us the chance to pick a subject that we were very passionate about.

On the first day we were briefed on the task that we had to do and were given time to plan our presentations, which could be presented in a variety of formats, for example on a Powerpoint or using small quizzes etc. For the skills-based lesson we were allowed to make practicals for the skill we were trying to teach – this gave us an opportunity to show that we had in-depth knowledge of our chosen skill and fact lesson. The chance to teach in a more practical way rather than just theoretically was particularly useful for me, having chosen to teach my group how to walk on a bearing. For me, a large proportion of the 17 minutes allowed for my fact-based lesson was taken up with answering various questions that my group asked me, enabling me to expand on my subject matter (the Rosetta Mission) and explore more with my group.

The course definitely gave us the confidence to teach groups of people different skill and fact-based lessons. ‘

Congratulations to all those cadets who successfully completed their MOI course:
