2023 is a historic year as we recognise 50 years of co-education at Bloxham School.

For half a century, boys and girls have benefited from a Bloxham education – a special place in which young people can grow, learn, explore and thereby reach their full potential.

In 1973, under Headmaster Derek Seymour, the first girls joined Bloxham, marking a new direction of success, diversification, and growth. By 1982 there were 25 girls in the Upper School and ever since, this has continued to increase year-on-year. Today there are over 550 girls and boys, aged 11-18, across nine day and boarding houses.

Headmaster Paul Sanderson is delighted to celebrate this milestone and explains: “Co-education is part of our DNA and as we reach 50 years, it is fantastic to celebrate how these five decades of coeducation have shaped the school today.

“I am a passionate advocate for co-education: it allows all children to learn together, alongside and from each other; intellectually and socially. Not only is this beneficial to everybody but also reflects the environment of today’s workplace.

“Regardless of gender, a students’ time at Bloxham is not simply about developing the very best academic results. It is about developing their skills for later life; resilience, tenacity, creativity, leadership, responsibility and an ability to work with others, meaning they leave here as socially well-adjusted young adults enabling them to live happy, fulfilling and successful lives.”

50 years ago the Headmaster of the time, Derek Seymour, stated: “I think boys and girls have different attitudes to their studies and to life and the fusion of ideas will be a good thing.”
