Hilary Pullen Burry, of Sompting in Sussex, who was killed at the age of 20 in March 1915 at the Battle of Neuve Chapelle, was originally left off because his widowed mother failed to inform the school of his death. Bugler Harry Ayres was a school servant who was buried in Bloxham churchyard after dying of wounds suffered at Ypres in July 1915. He died on his 18th birthday, and the school’s Headmaster recently decided that it was high time that this member of the school community should be added to the list of teachers and former pupils on the school’s memorial. The blessing of the new board was done in the presence of Michael and Joy Auld ‘ Joy is Harry Ayres’ great-niece.
