Lower School Curriculum





         The Lower School curriculum has been carefully designed
         to support and develop its students and is underpinned by
         expertise and educational best practice for learning at this
         age. The focus is firmly on their future, and on helping them

         to develop the strong academic foundations and excellent
         learning skills required to excel in their GCSEs.

















                                                                                                         The curriculum has been prepared to ensure solid grounding
                                                                                                         in the core subjects, while also exposing the students to new
                                                                                                         ones, so they are prepared to make an informed choice

                                                                                                         at GCSE. It emphasises cross-curricular learning, supporting
                                                                                                         students to make connections right across their subjects.
                                                                                                         This ensures they develop the rigour and quality of
                                                                                                         understanding required at GCSE and beyond.



                                                                                                         All lessons are taught by specialists who take the subject all the way to A Level and possess an
                                                                                                         in-depth understanding of the knowledge which students will need to acquire. Over the two years
                                                                                                         in the Lower School the teaching approach adapts, as students progress away from the closely
                                                                                                         supervised style on which they once depended, to one of proactive independent learning and
                                                                                                         critical thought. The pace and expectations on them increase steadily over this period to ensure
                                                                                                         they are thoroughly prepared for the senior school and transition well to their GCSE courses.
                                                                                                         In keeping with the wider school ethos, students are taught self-reflection and are assessed on
                                                                                                         their attitude to learning, giving them autonomy over their progress, learning and development.
                                                                                                         We believe this approach is essential if they are to reach their full academic potential as they
                                                                                                         move up the school.
