General Information

The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme is available to Sixth Formers who which to take part in the Gold Award. At present the school does not offer the Silver or Bronze Awards.

Enrolment on to the Award happens in the first weeks of the pupils’ Lower Sixth Michaelmas Term. Pupils are required to attend a weekly meeting for the first two terms, following this meetings become less frequent and operate on an ad hoc basis. The Award is now logged online and during the first term pupils upload information about the various sections they will participate in (see “Pupils Gold Intro”). The Lent Term of Lower Sixth is spent expedition training and planning. Following this meetings will happen when expeditions need to be planned or pupils’ eDofE accounts need to be updated.

Throughout the Award participants must complete three expeditions:

Time of Year

Location

Length

Summer Term of Lower Sixth (post AS exams)

Brecon Beacons or Forest of Dean

3 days, 2 nights

Half-term of Michaelmas Upper Sixth Term

Lake District or Dartmoor

4 days, 3 nights

Easter Holiday of Upper Sixth

Lake District or Dartmoor

4 days, 3 nights

The Duke of Edinburgh Award places the onus on the child to pursue and complete the requirements for gaining the Award. Logistically expeditions are hard to run during term time at Bloxham given the amount going on, therefore we tend to run expeditions in the holiday periods. I aim to let pupils know the date of a proposed expedition at least two months in advance; hopefully this will act as sufficient warning.

There is a registration fee of £40 and a further charge for each expedition participants go on, this charge will be no more than £70; this covers the cost of transport, equipment hire, staffing and accommodation fees.

Taking your Gold Duke of Edinburgh

The Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award is split down into five sections (as you will see in your record book). To achieve the award you must complete all sections and have them signed off by the member of staff/adult responsible. The sections that must be completed at Gold are:

-Volunteering

-Physical Activity

-Skills

-Expedition

-Residential

For more information on each section please look on the website at www.dofe.org/go/gold

Once pupils have decided on how they are going to fulfil their requirements for each section they must approach the member of staff/adult (if from outside the school) who is responsible for leading that activity and make them aware that they are going to be using it to count towards their Duke of Edinburgh. This must be done before this activity starts counting towards your D of E.

Activities need to be undertaken for the length of time specified below. You should be able to take part in the activity at least once a week, although there may be some leeway on this (please consult me if you have any queries).

If you have achieved your Silver Award you need to:

Volunteering

Physical

Skills

Expedition

Residential

12 months

One section for 12 months, the other section for six months

Plan, train and complete a 4 day, 3 night expedition

Undertake a shared activity in a residential setting away from home for 5 days and 4 nights

If you are a direct entry Gold candidate you need to either do your volunteering for an extra 6 months, or the longer of the skills or physical sections (thus making one 18 months, while the other remains at 6 months).
