Bloxham to Britannic: Fascinating Talk at Headmaster’s Dinner

Simon Mills 2017 Every year, the Headmaster invites Old Bloxhamists to attend an Evensong and dinner at the school.

On Saturday, we welcomed back 50 Old Bloxhamists, former members of staff, prefects and School Captains to the Headmaster's Dinner. Annabel and Jack, our School Captains, provided an overview of the year, their pride in the accomplishments of their colleagues shone through as they spoke of sporting achievements, drama, music, and recent inspections.

We were also joined by Old Bloxhamist, and renowned maritime historian, Simon Mills (Cr 1975-1980), who provided an insight into his career as a camera technician in the film industry, which included films such as The Living Daylights, Titanic, and Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Simon shared with us some of his favourite stills and behind the scene shots.

In 1996, Simon's interest in diving and vocation as camera technician - and in his own words, a mid-life crisis - led him to buy the wreck of HMHS Britannic, sister-ship to the Titanic, and Olympic. The cause of the Britannic's sinking was always a contentious issue, as it was not apparent whether it had been sunk by an enemy submarine or a mine, but Simon revealed that after an extensive search, they were able to find evidence that the latter was the cause of explosion. The after dinner speech was accompanied by some striking photographs and videos of the wreck, and was enjoyed by all.
