Crake House Newsletter - September 2008
Dear Parent(s),

It hardly seems possible that the boys have been back at school for twelve days, though it seems somewhat longer, and everyone has quickly settled into the routine of work, sport, music, activities and Crake life. Crake has twelve new 3rd form boys, four new L6 boys and is captained by Drew Hudman this year. Robin Pyper has joined us as a tutor whilst he teaches PE and completes his GTP qualification at Warwick University.

Rado Lolov gained five A level A grades, in his exams in June, and is due to start at St Catherine’s College, Oxford next month to read History. Jakob Benjamin gained four A grades in his exams and is off to Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge to read Architecture. Other notable achievements were William Warr (AAA) and Charles Bradshaw (AAB), though all members of last year’s U6 should be pleased and proud with their results. The best GCSE grades in Crake were gained by Joel Nath (7A* and 4A) and Nathaniel Smith (6A* and 3A). I hope that these results provide the inspiration for this years’ exam candidates to aspire to great things.

The rugby season is up and running with two block fixtures against Stowe and Reading Blue Coat school already completed. Drew Hudman, Peter Nash, Lewis Manning, Teddy Soppet, Josh Chilman and Ben Sawbridge (younger brother of Jack, last year’s house captain) are in the 1st XV. Sam Ryan, Henry Chamberlain(C), Max Mitcham, Billy Boscott, Edward Pires, Alex Tremlett and Rob Watts are in the Colts A team, Scott de Weymarn, Tom Miller, George Adams, Naz Zafar and Toby Chilman are in the Junior Colts A team, and Edward Beddows, Paul Burton, Joe Faccenda, Oak Richardson and Tom Simmonds have each played their first match for the Yearlings A team. The Badminton team has yet to play a match but I feel sure that Crake will have representation there also.

If not already received can I please have e-mail confirmation of 6pm day pupil departure arrangements. Can I remind some parents of boarders that I must have, by e-mail, requests for weekend leave by the Thursday beforehand? In many cases I’m sure that one e-mail, requesting leave for every weekend, would simplify matters considerably. A minimum of one e-mail at the start of each term would suffice.

At 7pm on Sunday 21st Sept there is an opportunity for all parents of new pupils to meet with their son’s subject teachers – a chance for an early ‘feel’ of the progress being made (see school calendar).

And finally, please keep Saturday 15th Nov. free in your diaries as this is the date of the Crake House Party (it is also my birthday – fantastic planning….!). This is an event where, whatever your son might say, as many parents as possible are encouraged to join the fun – theme as yet undecided. There is a disco and food for the boys and their guests, and a meal and an alcohol serving bar for the parents, tutors and staff. Please do come along as, this is definitely a case of, “the more the merrier” and one of the few occasions when parents and staff can meet and socialise over a glass of wine (or pint of Hooky beer in my case!). Please let me know by Sat.18th Oct (half term) if you would like to come.

Best regards and fingers X’d for another successful term in Crake, David
