Dear Egerton Parents,
I have published the updated Egerton House Handbook on the house website (http://www.bloxhamschool.com/Egerton.php). I think it wise that you and your son(s) refresh your knowledge of this booklet. I would specifically draw your attention to the sections on Communication, The Beginning of Term (though mainly aimed at parents of new boys it serves as a useful reminder, particularly from Matron). Other than that there are important reminders for dayboarders under the sections entitled Dayboarders and Absences and updates for boarders about Event Weekends. As experienced Bloxham and Egerton parents I suspect that focusing on these areas might save you a little time.
I hope that you will agree that the use of the Egerton website has been a positive move. Photographs and brief reports of what is going on as well as useful information will continue to be published on the site, although as you will have become aware, I am now using group emails to send urgent information home. Do please continue to update me with changes of address, telephone numbers (including mobiles) and email addresses. It is critical that the school’s database is kept up to date.
The Egerton House Party will be held on Saturday 4th October in the Great Hall starting at 7.30pm. I hope to see as many parents attending this year as last. In spite of what you may be told by your son, you are very welcome! It makes for a fantastic evening for all involved if parents can come along to support and enjoy the festivities. A meal and bar will be provided. I’ve had a word with Martin Johnson and sadly he’s unwilling to arrange another Anglo-French thriller for the evening, player burn-out and all that, but I’m sure we can still make the party go with a swing all the same.
Information that has come to my attention recently that might be of interest at this stage is the decision on dates for parents meetings for the next academic year: 3rd Form Sunday 8th February 2009 at 7.00pm, 4th Form on Sunday 17th May 2009 at 7.00pm, 5th Form on Saturday 14th February 2009 at 12.45pm, L6th Form on Sunday 8th March 2009 at 7.00pm and U6th Form on Sunday 16th November 2008 at 7.00pm. The dates follow the same pattern as this year except for the Upper Sixth which has moved from March to November.
The summer term has been another successful one. The boys have been unfailingly friendly and cooperative and the majority gave their best in most areas of school life. This was evident in our success in events such as the house tennis tournament in which we did ‘the double’ by winning both junior and senior titles, creditable seconds were achieved in the senior boys’ athletics, swimming and cricket competitions with notable performances by Julian Wallace and Angus Boyle respectively. Julian also won the 1500m at the county championships! House colours were awarded to David Park and Chris Bowden. All of the juniors competed well in swimming, cricket, tennis (winners) and athletics with each member of the house taking part in at least one event and some in all! The house concert was a real success and I would again like to thank all those who performed, supported and helped organise the event. Alex King was awarded a house merit tie for his efforts in stage managing the event. In addition, some most encouraging reports suggest that many of the boys in the house have taken their academic progress very seriously and could, with continued hard work, achieve some most creditable results in the exams this summer. I hope that the Egerton boys return after a good summer break ready to continue in the positive way they left off showing consideration to others whilst working individually and collectively together to realise their considerable potential in all areas of life.
A quick reminder that A Level and GCSE results days are the 14th and 21st August respectively. Full details of how to obtain results will be contained in the Headmaster’s end of term letter.
I am very grateful for your continued support and encouragement. I have enjoyed my first year in Egerton immensely and look forward to many more with young men as successful and personally rewarding as the current crop. I wish you all an enjoyable summer and look forward to seeing you when your son(s) arrive back in September.
With all good wishes,
Robin
