Yearlings A Cricket team (Sat 26th April)v Shiplake
On Saturday Bloxham had their first home fixture of the season, played on the Park Close wicket. Bloxham lost the toss and, for the third time, were asked to bowl first. One strength of this year’s team is the depth of bowling available to the captain, de Weymarn this week, and this was to prove to be Shiplake’s downfall. Stevenson and de Weymarn opened the attack, keeping the opposition to 15 for 1 wkt after six overs (A good catch by Hopkins off de Weymarn’s bowling). Bloxham’s one piece of good fortune was when, what was clearly, Shiplake’s star player played a pull shot to a Fisher delivery, skied it, and Rowley took a good catch at mid-wicket. From that point onwards, 34 for 2 after ten overs, Bloxham were in total control with all the bowlers tying the batsmen down. Stevenson was the only bowler to end wicket less (6 overs for 11 runs) and that was mainly as a result of him bowling outside of the off stump and too fast for the batsmen to hit. Were he, in schoolboy cricket, to bowl a little straighter he would collect a hat full of wickets. de Weymarn, Fisher, Chilman and Adams all got two wickets. Having failed to score 98 on Wednesday, 115 was far from being a foregone conclusion. Gurney and Gilmore opened the innings with a flourish and after 3 overs we had 22 runs. Gilmore will make good batsmen, to good bowling, but, as with the opening game of the season, must learn to play straight to straight balls (and have far greater patience). He lost his wicket playing an agricultural shot to a straight ball. Gurney and de Weymarn took the score onto 102 before Gurney was bowled for 46 (he fully deserved a half century). Gurney looked very secure during his innings and for much of it was the dominant partner. de Weymarn (45 Not Out) was unsure to start with but slowly grew in confidence and took a heavy toll on any wayward bowling. Rowley, having missed Wednesday’s match, faced half a dozen balls and finished on 5 Not Out. This was a very convincing victory and the team seem to be going from strength to strength.
PS: It was excellent to see so many parents supporting from the boundary on Saturday. If this is to be the regular level of Saturday attendance then I’ll make sure to increase the number of cakes and sandwiches available at tea!
Team: de Weymarn (C), Gurney, Stevenson, Rowley, Gilmore, Fisher, Adams, Chilman, Barkes, Hopkins and Young.
The 1st X1 lost in their game against Oratory as did the 2nd X1 in a high scoring match on Park Close. the match produced over 360 runs and was decided in the final over of the game.
